As we move around London, signs are all around us, announcing the names of businesses and alerting us to services offered and goods available. In our everyday lives, signs can become part of the landscape, standing out when needed and fading into the background when not. 

As museum objects, however, signs are the physical traces of a past London that only some may remember well. Many recall with affection, for example, Johnny and Dorothy Downs’ banquet facility, the Latin Quarter Place. As we move further into the past, though, London becomes an unfamiliar place. Where was Balkwill’s Hotel, for instance, and who ran it? This exhibition featuring signs from Museum London’s extensive artifact collection recalls and revives this fascinating forest city of yesteryear. It will also introduce some equally compelling Londoners. The signs in _London Recalling_ are mounted high on one of Museum London’s barrel vault walls.  This not only makes the most of the Museum’s architecture but also displays the signs as they would have been seen when first used.

London Recalling: Traces of Places from the City's Past

“Chicano/a/x Prints and Graphics: Selections from the Hispanic Research Center’s Collection, 1980–2010” showcases a partnership between ASU’s Hispanic Research Center (HRC) and ASU Art Museum and brings together works from the 1980s into the 2010s drawn from the HRC’s dynamic collection. Featuring over 30 artists who each offer a kaleidoscope of perspectives on the Mexican American experience, this year-long exhibition pays homage to the ideals of the Chicano Movement of the 1960s and 70s and expands upon them through the widely disseminated medium of prints. Presented in two parts, this unique exhibition underscores how Chicano/a/x artists have employed prints and graphics to build community, engage with social concerns, and interrogate shifting notions of political and cultural identity over time.

“Chicano/a/x Prints and Graphics: Selections from the Hispanic Research Center’s Collection, 1980–2010” is organized by ASUAM Senior Curator Alana Hernandez and ASUAM Curator Brittany Corrales and is made possible by funding provided by the Evelyn Smith Exhibition Fund. Additional funding is provided by ASU’s Hispanic Research Center and The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. The exhibition is presented in collaboration with a Community of Practice composed of Carla Chavarria, Community Building Director, Iconico, and Carla León Celaya, PhD candidate in the Spanish Department at the School of International Letters and Cultures, ASU.

Chicano/a/x Prints and Graphics: Selections from the Hispanic Research Center’s Collection

Verde Canyon Railroad is proud to be a sponsor of the Phoenix-based wildlife rescue, Liberty Wildlife. All are welcome to visit Verde Canyon Railroad depot for Raptors at the Rails, an educational presentation on the patio on select dates 11:00am-12:45pm. This free event prior to the train’s 1:00 pm departure features close-up glimpses of Arizona raptors such as eagles, hawks, owls, vultures, falcons and kestrels, amazing residents of Liberty Wildlife’s educational program. During the summer months, Liberty shares cold-blooded creatures such as tortoises, lizards and snakes during "Reptiles at the Rails".

Ukutula: Our Timeless Journeys centres on a display of sixteen extraordinarily diverse traditional West African masks. These masks, part of the Agnes’ Justin and Elisabeth Lang Collection, appear in chorus with the contemporary work of five Canadian artists from the African and Asian diasporas: Anthony Gebrehiwot, Jill Glatt, Jessica Karuhanga, Camille Turner, and Winsom Winsom.

Employing photography, new media and video, textile installation and more, the artists of Ukutula: Our Timeless Journeys reflect on diasporic roots by exploring themes of identity, transformation, the body, belonging, place and regional histories. The exhibition collectively invites us to explore the relationship between the past and present, and how our physical and spiritual journeys shape who we are.

Ukutula: Our Timeless Journeys

The shapes of feathers, wings, flowers and leaves combine in a constellation of ceramic and bronze to comprise Forever (Bird-Botanicals), a site-specific installation by Ecuadorian-Canadian sculptor David Constantino Salazar. The work combines recognizable bird anatomy with plant forms to probe the theme of transformation in contemporary culture.

Often representative of freedom, love, peace, and divinity, the symbol of the bird is ripe with meaning. In South American folklore, for example, birds and other animals are evocative of transformation, often shapeshifting between forms in fables. In Museum London’s Atrium, Salazar’s birds are in a state of transition, too, as if between life and death. Here, botanicals grow around misshapen appendages.

To create each element of the work, the artist meticulously hand crafts birds out of clay and throws them against his studio wall. Radically altering their appearance, this act transforms each sculpture into something new entirely. Each component evokes the natural evolution of all living things, as we journey between one state of being to another.
