The term "plein air," originating from French, signifies being outdoors and pertains to the practice of creating entire finished artworks outdoors, as opposed to within a studio. Plein Air painting stands as a significant movement within the history of art and is currently on the rise.


This occasion is hosted amidst the captivating southern Black Hills of South Dakota, offering boundless avenues for creative expression. The locale boasts undulating emerald hills, lush forests, expansive prairies, serene lakes, meandering creeks, and a thriving array of wildlife.

Get ready to experience the ultimate autumn celebration! The Great Downtown Pumpkin Festival is not only the biggest annual event in Downtown Rapid City [https://www.visitrapidcity.com/things-to-do/downtown-rapid-city/] but a beloved tradition that embodies the heart and soul of the fall season. From Main Street Square [https://www.visitrapidcity.com/listing/main-street-square/567/] to Memorial Park [https://www.visitrapidcity.com/listing/memorial-park/854/], this festival is a sprawling celebration that has something for everyone. 


From 10am to 4pm, The Great Downtown Pumpkin Festival brings to life a variety of festive fall fun. Shop from a large selection of local vendors, taste your way through the creations of local food trucks, and participate in all the pumpkin themed fun. This event is free, family-friendly, and the greatest way to kick-off the fall season in Rapid City.


Here’s what’s in store:


 * Giant Pumpkin Weigh-Off: Who grew the biggest gourd in town? Come find out!
 * Kidz Zone: Enjoy bouncing castles and yard games, courtesy of Monument Health, Scull Constructions, & The Law Offices of Gunderson, Palmer, Nelson & Ashmore.
 * 3 Buck Chuck: Test your aim by tossing pumpkins at fall-themed targets, brought to you by Casey Peterson.
 * 70+ Vendors: Discover unique crafts, tasty food, and more from various shops!
 * Pumpkin Chunkin': Watch local students' trebuchets in action as they compete in three thrilling rounds of pumpkin launching. This fun is brought to you by RESPEC!
 * Touch-a-Truck: Kids can explore and climb aboard big trucks from all over.
 * Pumpkin Painting Station: Get creative at our Pumpkin Painting Station, brought to you by Formanek Electric.
 * Pumpkin Carving Contest: Show off your artistic side! Register your carved or painted pumpkin for live voting at the festival.
 * Pumpkin Pub Crawl: From 12pm to 7pm, tour seasonal adult beverages at participating downtown businesses.
 * Downtown Business Scarecrow Contest: Vote for your favorite scarecrow! Voting can be done via QR code attached to each scarecrow, at the Rapid City Visitors Center (613 Main Street), or at the Pumpkin Festival.

The Great Downtown Pumpkin Festival

The sculpture is illuminated nightly, year-round.
During the summer months join a park ranger in the park's outdoor amphitheater for an inspirational 45-minute program focusing on the presidents, patriotism and the nation's history. Beginning with a ranger talk, this program continues with the film "Freedom: America's Lasting Legacy" (captioned) and culminates with the lighting of the memorial. Program held nightly late May through the end of September.


May 24th - August 10th program starts at 9:00 PM.


August 11th - September 30th program starts at 8:00 PM.

Hosted by the Rapid City Police Department, this free event showcases an impressive lineup of classic cars from 12pm to 4pm, each with its own unique story. From the gleam of polished chrome to the roar of vintage engines, the Cruiser Car Show is a car enthusiast's dream. As you tour the stunning array of high-powered classics, engage with proud owners, and even cast your vote for the top pick.


But it's not just about the cars - the bustling atmosphere is also filled with local flavors and unique merchandise from food trucks and vendors, who set up around Main Street Square [https://www.visitrapidcity.com/listing/main-street-square/567/]. It's also the only time the Rapid City Police Department demonstrate the abilities of their K-9 unit. Get ready to raise your stein at Main Street Square’s 15th Annual Bierbörse on Saturday, October 11th, from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Immerse yourself in a vibrant celebration of German beer and culture.  Playing on the Main Street Stage will be Stereotrip!

Black Hills Farmers Market Spring/Summer

Tiny ghouls and goblins invade Downtown Rapid City for an afternoon of ghostly family fun. 


The event is free and children and parents are encouraged to wear costumes, bring their own trick-or-treat bags and meet at Main Street Square, where they may pick up a list of participating Downtown businesses. Downtown motorists are asked to be aware of trick-or-treaters throughout the day.

Hairball, the ultimate rock ‘n roll tribute band, is bringing their high-energy, larger-than-life performance to Deadwood Mountain Grand on Saturday, November 1st, 2025, at 8:00 p.m. Known for their spot-on renditions of rock anthems from legends like KISS, Motley Crue, and Queen, Hairball delivers an unforgettable live experience that fans won’t want to miss.

The Black Jacket Symphony offers a unique concert experience through recreating classic albums in a live performance setting. A selected album is performed in its entirety by a group of handpicked musicians specifically selected for each album, with no sonic detail being overlooked--the musicians do whatever it takes to musically reproduce the album.

Discover the enchanting Winter Market at Main Street Square in Downtown Rapid City! This free event, running from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM, kicks off the holiday season with twinkling lights, festive cheer, and activities for everyone. Watch as the mayor lights the giant Holiday Tree and enjoy the grand opening of the ice rink for some winter fun. Experience the magic of the season with delicious food trucks, live music, and local vendors.


Bonus: This event coincides with the Festival of Lights Parade [https://www.visitrapidcity.com/event/festival-of-lights-parade/3995/] in Rapid City featuring sparkling floats that light up Main Street and Saint Joseph Street.

From a very small start in 1976-78, LNI has experienced many changes and has grown immensely. The last 47 years have been filled with great memories and exciting games, including cultural and academic events with outstanding young men and women.


Each year, the Lakota Nation Invitational has grown. We have been proud of all the young people who have given their best as they compete in honor of their schools, families, and respected nations from near and far. Their efforts are exceptional and our youth are the reason we all come together in the spirit of friendship and goodwill. The best athletes are here in basketball, wrestling, cheerleading, and countless other competitions!
