Bill Baggs Birthday Bash & Award Announcement

Journalism, civic engagement and the legacy of longtime Miami News editor Bill Baggs come into focus during an evening gathering beside the Cape Florida Lighthouse. Held Wednesday, September 30 at Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park, the program commemorates Baggs’ birthday and introduces the new Bill Baggs Fearless Journalism Award. Baggs served as editor of the Miami News from 1957 until his death in 1969, using his editorial platform to advocate for civil rights, public education and environmental preservation. The evening includes remarks from his son Craig Baggs and representatives of the Key Biscayne Community Foundation, Miami Foundation, Press Forward and Friends of Cape Florida, along with a presentation by Amy Paige Condon, author of A Nervous Man Shouldn’t Be Here in the First Place: The Life of Bill Baggs. Guests can also explore the Cape Florida Lighthouse and Keeper’s Cottage, view a documentary about Baggs and experience a holographic presentation centered on his life and work. Refreshments, light bites and music are included. Admission is free for Friends of Cape Florida members, with a suggested $25 donation for nonmembers; regular state park entry fees apply.
