The National Gallery of Jamaica is staging a panel discussion to accompany its Explorations IV: Masculinities exhibition. This panel discussion will take place on Thursday, March 17, starting at 1:30 pm, at the National Gallery of Jamaica, and will be followed by a curatorial tour of the exhibition.

Moderated by Senior Curator O’Neil Lawrence, the panel will include Lecturer in Sociology, Psychology and Social Work, Dr Moji Anderson; Gender and Social Research Specialist, Suzanne Charles-Watson; Lecturer in Anthropology (Qualitative research), Dr Herbert Gayle; and dancer and choreographer Kevin Ormsby. Using the various themes presented in the Masculinities exhibition as their contextual framework, the panellists will engage with the social and cultural issues explored within the exhibition, particularly with how masculinities are understood, enacted and contested in Jamaican society.

The Masculinities exhibition is part of the National Gallery’s Explorations series, which explores major themes in Jamaican art and the critical issues in Jamaican society these themes represent. The series also creates a dialogue between contemporary, modern and historical art produced in and about Jamaica, yielding new insights about Jamaican art and society in the process. Its current edition Explorations IV: Masculinities looks at the varied ways in which the concept of Jamaican masculinities have been represented, and at times challenged, within the visual arts.

The Masculinities panel discussion on March 17 is free and open to the public, as is the curatorial tour which follows after. The Explorations IV: Masculinities exhibition was originally scheduled to close on March 5 but has been extended until March 26.

Outdoor Madness Boot Camp

The event is set to take place on March 17, 2016 at the Hilton Rose Hall Hotel & Spa in Montego Bay. It is being hosted by the Tourism Linkages Hub in partnership with the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association (JHTA), the Jamaica Manufacturers’ Association (JMA), Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA) and other entities.

The first Tourism Linkages Speed Networking Event saw nearly 200 supplier and buyer companies meeting directly to discuss business opportunities and to also negotiate contracts. This massive support given by local businesses has been lauded by the Minister of Tourism and Entertainment Hon. Dr. Wykeham McNeill as being “a gratifying demonstration of real commitment to the concept of backward and forward linkages.”

The speed networking event is currently open to businesses who offer a wide range of goods and services. Participants in the past included suppliers of: craft, toiletries and guest amenities, chemicals and cleaning products, cosmetic and spa products, furniture, bedding, food and beverage, uniforms, printing and packaging, training, ICT goods and services, electrical services, meat and fresh produce.
This year, the Tourism Linkages Hub hopes to diversify the businesses participating, by having more service-oriented organisations present.

“Specifically, we want to include entertainment and construction services in a more strategic way. We have invited proprietors who have not yet started building their properties as well as existing hoteliers who will be expanding and/or refurbishing in the near future. Also, entertainment practitioners have requested an opportunity to speak to industry players directly, so this will be ideal for them,” said McDonald-Riley.

Coffee Break Workshop – Bringing Everyday Flavours to Life!

The Jamaica Business Development Corporation (JBDC) will be facilitating a Coffee Break Workshop- “Bringing Everyday Flavours to Life”, on March 14-23, 2016. The workshop will be executed over eight days and will focus on assisting participants to develop local food ingredients into exceptional meal options.

The Coffee Break Workshop has had several successful runs over the years and is ultimately designed to aid individuals who are involved in the food industry to think outside of the box, while utilising local and accessible ingredients. We are aware that the general food business tends to stick to classic menu options. However, to excel in business today, individuals interested in pursuing a business should be prepared to think outside of the box. This workshop will therefore not only impart food techniques, but will also focus on assisting the participants to build or develop a business using various business components such as Meal Planning & Preparation as well as Costing & Pricing. Participants will also obtain hands-on experience and feedback from industry experts.
This Workshop targets restaurateurs, caterers, administrative support staff, professionals, and food lovers.

Coffee Break 2016 – “Bringing Everyday Flavours to Life”, is part of the JBDC’s thrust to facilitate the development of small businesses through training, with the ultimate aim of boosting their competitiveness and sustainability.  

Participants will also be presented with a certificate of participation, and will be engaged in follow-up activities, including access to the Food Incubator located at the Incubator and Resource Centre (76 Marcus Garvey Drive, Kingston 13).
