The Organizing Committee of the Jamaica Amateur Bodybuilding and Fitness Association (JABBFA) extends a warm welcome and invitation to all athletes to participate in its Supligen National Championships and Fitness Expo from August 26th – 27th August starting at 1:00 p.m. at the Utech Auditorium.  The 2016 National Championships and Fitness Expo is a national competition sanctioned by the Central American and Caribbean Bodybuilding & Fitness Federation (CACBBFF), which is a Continental Branch of the IFBB with 38 affiliated countries and territories. 
All athletes who wish to participate in this event must attend at least one of the Rehearsals in preparations for the Championships, during the sessions the Organizing Committee will sensitize competitors to the running order of the show, appropriate entry and exit of the stage, and other critical elements for an effective performance. Additionally all competitors registration data including categories will be validated and selected athletes measured and weighed

Brief Background on Sound System

The sound system originated in Jamaica in the 1950s as a means to share music with the inner city community who could not afford personal radios. Early pioneers made speaker boxes to amplify the sound from record players and this would attract a crowd. Soon it was recognized that this could be a business venture if they created an enclosed space and charge an entrance fee; which is the long and short of how the dancehall lawn and street dance phenomenon came about. 

And just as ants follows milk, others saw it was a lucrative business and soon there was a thriving sound system industry. Set owners would develop a number of tricks to pull the crowd, as well as to be labelled with the coveted title of 'king sound' aka sound of all sounds. This rivalry led to the creation of the Jamaican music forms, which is another story that wont be told here today. This strive to wear the 'king crown' also led to the development of the infamous art of soundclash. That too is a great story worth telling. Google is your friend. 

Nevertheless, sound system culture has grown beyond the island of Jamaica and has now transformed into a global culture with sound systems from all over the world.  

SoundFEST is an event to celebrate this cultural movement and to recognize the contribution of sound systems to contemporary music forms. However, on the night of the event, all music will be played the 'original' sound system style and fashion; from the amplified speaker boxes of the musical equipment built to play Jamaican music. 

SoundFEST is more than an event. It is a movement to highlight sound system culture with the interest to grow an industry that has often times been overlooked having been born of the creativity of those in a dire situation and continues to be the main source of entertainment for the working class man and woman in Jamaica. 

SoundFEST is the dance of all dances. original dancehall style and fashion. come enjoy the very best of sound system culture. 18 & older.

A little about L.A Wanliss

L.A.Wanliss is currently enrolled in the MFA in Creative Writing Program at The University of the West Indies St. Augustine and is a recipient of 2016\2017 Canada CARICOM Emerging Leaders Scholarship. She has been published in Susumba Bag Moonlight (2016), The Caribbean Writer Nostalgia in Apron (2015), The Jamaica Journal Ana (2015), Small Axe Literary Journal Watching Death (2014). Lesley-Ann Wanliss has been the recipient of the Second Place prize in the Short Fiction component of the Small Axe Literary Competition (2013), a featured poet at the Poetry Society of Jamaica (2012) and is the holder of an Honorable Mention Award for Prose from the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) (2011).

JamCan Jazz Quartet are Nathalie Craan (vocals), David Beckstead (guitar), Jeremy Ashbourne (drums) and Jared Beckstead (bass). Friday’s show sees them performing guitar arrangements of Jazz classics and more modern tunes by artists such as Carmen McCrae, Cassandra Wilson, Diana Krall and Nina Simone.  

The show will also feature Japanese Pianist, Kayo Yoshida.

Location: Tru Juice Estate, Bog Walk.(Bog Walk – 40 minutes drive from Half-Way-Tree)

Instructions: 

1. We meet on the property of Tru Juice Orange Orchards, Bog Walk St Catherine by 6:15 am sharp
2. Roll Call and commence hike by 6:45am
3. Scenic View/Rest Stop approx 8am atop the mountain ridge overlooking the new highway.
4. Descend Ridge by 8:30 am, Estimated arrival time back at Tru Juice River Spot 9:45am
6. Picnic, swim, rest and relax.
7. Head back to Kingston by 12:30pm 

FOR HIKE:
1. Bring your own snacks, hysotonic drinks, LOTS OF WATER TO KEEP HYDRATED.
2.Dress comfortable in bright colors, wear 2 socks in shoes/sneakers with good traction.
3. Insect repellent, raincoats, First Aid items.
4.Take your cameras to capture all sights and scenes

***Details & Highlights***: 
This trail is nestled within the deep back woods of the Tru Juice Estate. It has everything one looks for on a hiking excursion and more. The Starting point runs alongside the main tributary of the Rio Cobre with chirping birds that feed on the ripe oranges and spans the “zillion” acre estate. The trail winds through the orange-groves and underpass of the new highway to the foot of the Mountain Range that stretches from Bog Walk to Springvale, South of Bog Walk to the Barry Main Road over 300 feet above sea level.

The uphill climb is on rocky grounds through a canopy of trees to over 1000 feet above sea level which is the most difficult portion of the hike. The trek is steep and challenging but the saving grace is the coolness from the trees and many stumps/large rocks to sit on to “tek a five.” It’s just fifteen hundred meters to the top where you will soon forget the challenge from the view you will see. The view from the top covers the entire valley from Bog Walk through Linstead, Ewarton and all surrounding areas. Strike a pose, take pictures and head eastward downhill, back through the orange-groves to riverside for food, swim, relaxation and lyme.
